Process Modelling & Simulation

Process Simulation

Process simulation is a technique that uses mathematical models to represent the behaviour of real systems or processes. It can be used for various purposes, such as design, optimization, control, training, and decision making. Process simulation can help engineers and managers to evaluate different scenarios and alternatives, identify potential problems and risks, and improve the performance and efficiency of the system or process.

Fedem Engineering employs the power and flexibility of recognised steady state and dynamic simulation tools to model and analyse your system. We do this by creating a graphical representation of the essential components of your system, defined in a way that facilitate the application of mathematical and scientific principles to predict your system behaviour.

We then use the models to size and rate equipment, perform rigorous mass and energy balances, as well as transient and surge analysis for processes applied in the oil and gas, chemicals, Nuclear and the water sector.

Our models are developed using direct plant data or industry-standard thermodynamic methods and physical property data to provide robust and accurate results. Our process simulation services and experience includes:

  • Steady State Process Simulation

  • Dynamic Process Simulation

  • Hydraulic Modelling and Network Analysis

  • Water Harmer and Surge Analysis

  • Pressure Relief and Flare System Analysis

Steady State Simulation

Steady state simulation is a method of analyzing the behavior of a system under constant conditions. It assumes that the system has reached a state of equilibrium, where all the variables and parameters are constant and do not change over time.

Steady state simulation program provides computational capabilities for calculating mass and energy balances for models in equilibrium conditions, either for single units or for entire plants.

Through the use of a state-of-the-art process simulation system which incorporates first principles process models, thermodynamic methods, and data, we can create a heat and mass balance for your process that allows you to better understand its operation and increase yield and efficiency, saving you time and reducing risk. Some of the services we provide using steady state simulation includes:

  • Design of new processes

  • Optimisation or debottlenecking of existing processes

  • Design and rating of process equipment

  • Sizing and evaluation of safety relief devices

  • Performance monitoring of processes

  • Economic evaluation and comparisons of process alternatives

Dynamic Simulation

Dynamic simulation is an extension of steady-state process simulation that uses mathematical models to represent the behavior of complex systems over time. In other words, the behaviour of equipment is considered over time, enabling the identification of equipment design constraints, hydraulic limitations, control system interactions or transient condition issues..

Fedem Engineering offers expertise and experience in dynamic simulation. Using the latest industry standard engineering software, such as Dynsim, CHEMCAD and Hysys Dynamic, we can utilise dynamic simulation to provide the following services:

  • Control Scheme Design Validation

  • Controller Optimisation

  • Process Optimisation

  • Start-up procedure development

  • Depressurisation/Relief Studies

  • Safety Evaluation

  • Utility System Verification

Hydraulic Modelling & Network Analysis

Hydraulic modelling is a process of creating a mathematical representation of a physical system of pipes, valves, pumps, and other hydraulic components that involves solving a set of equations that describe the conservation of mass and energy in the system. The equations relate the flow rate, pressure, head loss, and power consumption of each element in the network.

At Fedem, we can build network for incompressible and compressible models of your liquid and gas distribution systems, determine pressure drop across the network, size pipes, pumps, orifice plates, control valve and evaluate heat transfer in pipes & heat exchanger; and evaluate pump performance using either hand calculation or fluid analysis software.

Our process experience and services include:

  • Hydraulic and Thermal Calculations on Piping

  • Pump Hydraulic Calculations

  • Steady State Fluid Analysis

  • Transient Fluid Analysis

Pressure Relief and Flare System Design

A pressure relief and flare system is a safety system that protects process equipment from overpressure and prevents the release of hazardous substances to the environment. The system consists of three main components: pressure relief devices, flare headers, and flare stack. Pressure relief devices are valves or rupture disks that open when the pressure in the equipment exceeds a predetermined limit.

We have extensive experience in pressure relief analysis and can help you design, specify, or review individual items or site-wide systems.

Our process experience and services includes:

  • PSV Relief Load Calculation

  • Relief Valve Sizing & Datasheet

  • Design of Piping Upstream and Downstream of Relief Devices

  • Determination of Flare Design Capacity

  • Sizing of Flare Header

  • Flare Stack Sizing

  • Design of Flare Knockout Drum
